Dyeing with plant materials.

It has been a little while since I posted photos of plant dyeing, but that does not mean I haven't done any. I just decided to show more at the same time.
I plan to do more plant dyes, as there are still several dye plants to find in nature. And I also want to dye the white hand spun wool yarn I bought at the market in the weekend.

Here are the results from my latest dyes.

The photos below show the yarn in the same order as in the first photo.

Dyed with st.john's wort (left) and st.john's wort + copper (right).

Dyed with Lawson cypress + iron +  potash (and this was not a planned combination).
My goal was to produce the same beautiful brown colour that Mia achieved when dyeing with Lawson cypress, but my wool dyed bright yellow. So I added some iron, hoping it would turn to brownish, but nothing changed. Then I added some potash just to see if there would be a change of colour. And it really did. The water turned black, and the end result was this dark green colour.

Farget med knoppurt.

Dyed with knapweed.

Min femte farging med eikeblader.
Garnet fra første gangs farging fikk en noe ubestemmelig rosa-lilla-brun farge, mens garnet i andre farging ble helt rent lyselilla (hurra) :)!!

My fifth dye with oak leaves this summer.
The first three skeins dyed a sort of pink-purple-brown colour, while the next two skeins dyed clear light purple (hooray) :)!!

Farget med tørket sandeltre, 1. og 2. gangs farging.
Sandeltre farger noe ujevnt, men selve fargen er fin.

Dyed with dried sandalwood, first and second dye.
Sandalwood dyes a bit uneavenly, but the colour is nice.

Dyed with birch leaves (left) and birch leaves + copper (right).

So beautiful. I just love the way the colours come out so naturally. I wish all wool was dyed this way. I might have more luck finding colours I really like then. :-) I LOVE all of your colours today. <3

Amazing what you can achieve with plant dye Hilde! Love all the colors! Jot it all down, maybe you can write a little book on wool dyeing one day! :-)

Hi,Hilde.
Surprising! You made many colors from plant dyes. All of them are beautiful. Especially I like to see the dark green color you tried many times to do. It must be a lot of work but fabulous time for you!
Have a good day,Hilde.

Yet again beautiful colours. I also love the way you arrange things to photograph. It is as though you are returning the natural products back to their environment.

Thank you so much for your nice comments, Karisma, Yael, Tomoko, Lirosa, Datacreata and Jorunn, and for the kind words about my naturally dyed yarn :) The colours achieved from plants is one of nature's many wonderful gifts!

Wow!! They are really gorgeous Hilde. I love plant dyed fabrics and yarns - the colours are so desaturated in a beautiful way. :)
