Avocado dye.

Normally I dye wool with plants I find in the surrounding nature here, but when Yael a while ago mentioned in the comment section something about dyeing with avocado peel I got a bit curious. So I googled to see what I could find out.
I learned that it is the peel and seed of the avocado that contains dye, and as those give different shades they are usually dyed with individually.

We do not eat avocado much, but I decided to save peel and seed whenever we had some, and have been storing it in the freezer untill I had saved up enough for a dye.
When I had saved uo peel and seeds of six avocadoes I decided to give it a try. I did not expect to achieve much dye from this small amount, so I thought I would make a dye from both peel and seeds at the same time, hoping it would be enough to dye 50 grams of wool.

I put the avocado peel and crushed seeds into the pot, poured over water, added some ammonia and left it to soak for some hours. Then turned on the heat and let it simmer as usual.
It turned out avocadoes contain a lot of dye, as the water turned almost black (see the small glass).

Garnet under første farging.

This is the wool during the first dye. A lovely redish brown shade :)
The dye from peel and seeds of six avocadoes actually was enough to dye 500 grams of wool yarn!

In the first two dyes I dyed 150 grams of wool at the same time, and the results were beautiful stong redish brown shades.
It seemed to be more dye left in the pot, so I added another 100 grams of wool, which turned out a kind of light apricot colour.
The dyeing pot still seemed to contain more colour, so I decided to squeeze the last dye out by adding more ammonia and 100 grams of superwash yarn (which takes the dye easier than other wool).
The added ammonia made the colour turn to blueish, and the last wool dyed a kind of lilac blue shade.

My favourites are the redish brown shades :)
It was really fun to dye with avocado, and getting a result that differs from the yellow and greenish shades usually achieved from the plants in the Nordic nature.
I will start saving more avocado peel and seeds, and the next time I will make dyes from the peel and seeds separately.

This is so exciting! Your results are really beautiful and so very inspiring... Just like you, I´ve been saving avocado-peel for a while now and reading so much about it - I might even give it a try now!
Have a great weekend Hilde!

Me too I've been collecting avocados lately for dyeing but I don't have enough yet. Those colors are fantastic Hilde! I've read somewhere you can make purple dye with it !
OK, I think I will prepare some guacamole this evening :)

I´ve got 2 really good articles on dyeing with avocadoskins - another dyer sent them to me, and if you want to, you can send me your emailadress on: kristin-hrund@gmx.de and I´ll send them to you!

How fun that the three of us at the same time have been planning and saving up avocadoskins for dyeing :)
I can't wait to see the colours you achieve.

Kristin: How nice of you, I would love to read those articles, I will send you an email.

Marylene: Enjoy the guacamole, I think I will make some tomorrow :-)

...a very informative and deliciously creative post!... ...a quiet ponder: how much ammonia did yoU use? ~ blessed be! ~ dear kindred!...(:

Thank you, Samantha, I'm so glad you liked it :)
About the ammonia I actually did not measure it up, but I think I used a little less than 1 dl in the dye pot. And for the last dye only a few drops.

It's truly amazing what nature offers us if we look closely and see all the wonderful possibilities! I'm fascinated by the natural dyes you use, Hilde, as by everything natural!
What a gorgeous job you did!
Have a wonderful Sunday! :)

Hei!!
Imponerende!

Thanks Anna :) Hope you are having a wonderful Sunday too!

I knew a little about vegetable dyes from an old gardening book but I didn't know about avocados. And I didn't expect that colour, I thought it would be green. It's beautiful. Funny how it changed.

Thanks Mac :) Dyeing is so much fun, and I was really pleased with the avocado results :)
