Wild Bird Wednesday.

This morning I noticed a green bird sitting on a tree trunk in the forest edge outside our house. It was a bird I haven't seen here before, but I recognized it as some kind of woodpecker.
I went inside to get my camera as quietly as I could.

When I got back outside the bird had moved higher up in the tree, now placed in shade, so the photos did not turn out as good as I hadd hoped. Though I was happy to get some photos of it anyway :)

After a little googling and comparing of photos of European green woodpecker and Grey-headed woodpecker I think it is the Green woodpecker that came by.
The European green woodpecker lives in most parts of Europe and in some parts of Asia. Its main food is ants.

We have heard something we have believed to be the song of the Green woodpecker in the woods earlier, but never seen the bird. It just might be this fellow we have heard.

Vakker fugl :)

Below are two more photos enlarged and a little lighter.
A beautiful bird :)

It's a beautiful bird and you did well with your captures. There is some similarity to the Northern Flickers we have here in Vancouver, but then again, the similarity may just be the features found in all woodpeckers :)

I love spotting new birds, and this woodpecker is really pretty! I thought it looked very much like our Flickers here too. Great that you were able to get him in a photo at all ;) Wendy

Beautiful looking woodpecker.

I thought it was some kind of woodpecker! They are beautiful birds and your photos are beautiful too Hilde.

As it has a red cap on its head, it is probably the lesser spotted woodpecker rather than the green. I love woodpeckers as long as they are not hammering trees too early in the morning!

Great shots of a lovely little fellow!!! I can hear woodpeckers "pecking" at tree trunks in the woods here, but they are usually high up and it's hard to see them...

Fabelaktig bildeserie!
Klem;)

Great pictures of the green woodpecker. I was fortunate to catch a redheaded woodpecker here in Arkansas a few weeks ago in my friend's back yard. I had never seen one before and was happy to have my camera!

For en vakker fugl du hadde besøk av.. Ja, det er så gøy når de er så nære at man kan fange det med linsa..

Ha en fin, fin kveld... Klem
